10 amazing beauty hacks to make your makeup go further

A long time ago

Once upon a time, and not for very long, I was a makeup artist. I learned a few tricks and tips along the way.

If you've ever smashed a much-loved eye shadow palette or picked up a nail varnish only to discover it's gone all gloopy, then fear not. I've got your back.

Who doesn’t love a good hack?

If you’ve ever dropped and smashed a much-loved eye shadow palette or picked up a nail varnish only to discover it’s gone all gloopy, then fear not. I’ve got your back.

Here are 10 of my favourite beauty hacks:

1. Fix a smashed powder palette

If you drop and smash your favourite powder blusher or eye shadow, don’t despair. Crush it into a powder, mix it with a few drops of saline solution, smooth it out with a spatula and wait for 20 minutes. Voilà, good as new.

2. Spot treatment

Here’s a natural treatment for spots: dab some full-fat Greek yoghurt on the spot and let it dry before rinsing off. The yoghurt contains lactic acid, probiotics and fat which will reduce the inflammation and calm the redness.

3. Make your lippy last longer

To keep your lipstick looking fresh for longer, apply lipstick generously, then place a tissue over your lips and dust a light coating of translucent powder over the tissue with a soft brush. Apply another coat of lipstick.

4. No more panda eyes

Here’s a tip to stop you getting mascara below your eyes and on your eyelids. Hold a spoon to the skin on your eyelid, and then below your lower lashes when applying your mascara. Any excess will go onto the spoon, not your skin.

5. Gloopy nail vanish be gone

When your nail varnish goes all thick and gloopy, put the bottle in a cup of boiling water for a couple of minutes. When you take it out, it will be runny again (but beware hot contents!).

6. Easy smoky eyes

I’m a big fan of gel eyeliners. They don’t smudge, are easy to apply and produce an intense smoky look. You can create a very similar effect using a normal kohl eyeliner pencil with this quick hack. Carefully heat the end of an eyeliner pencil with a lighter or match for just 1 second. Let it cool down for about 20 seconds. It will now be smoother to apply and will give a more intensive colour.

7. Curl those lashes

For a fast and long-lasting eyelash curl, heat your lash curler with a hairdryer before using it. But be careful – the metal gets hot!

8. Gloopy mascara be gone

Make your mascara go further by adding a few eye drops to the tube and rubbing the wand around inside. It will loosen the dry mascara and give you a few extra days’ use.

9. Multiuse mascara

If you run out of liquid eyeliner and don’t have time to buy more, you can use your mascara. Just run your eyeliner brush over your mascara wand to pick up the product

10. The eyes have it

If you want to make your eyes look larger, use white eyeliner in your waterline.

I’m sure there are loads of hacks I’ve missed out. What are your favourites? Let me know in the comments below and don’t forget to visit my other beauty features by clicking here.
