Life hacks in the kitchen: 12 top tips for an easier life

This post doesn’t really need much of an introduction. Who doesn’t love a life hack? Here are my favourites to make life easier in the kitchen. My pleasure.
1.The best way to clean your chopping board: rub a handful of salt around the surface with half a lemon and rinse well
2.To prevent potatoes from sprouting, store them with an apple
3.If you’ve dropped a bit of eggshell in the bowl when cracking your eggs, use half the shell to scoop it up. The mummy eggshell attracts the baby eggshell and can be easily removed.
4.Use a straw to remove the stem and white core from your strawberries
5.To chill your beer quickly, wrap the bottle in a wet paper towel and refrigerate for 15 minutes
6.Add a couple of marshmallows to your jar of brown sugar to keep the sugar soft
7.Sanitise wash cloths and sponges in the microwave: soak them in water and white vinegar or lemon juice and nuke them for one minute (be careful they will be hot!)
8.Make easy-peel hard boiled eggs by adding half a teaspoon of baking soda to the boiling water
9.To prevent your eyes watering when chopping onions, wipe a layer of white vinegar over your chopping board first
10.Tap water makes cloudy ice cubes. To make crystal clear ice cubes, use slightly cooled boiled water in your ice trays
11.Use frozen grapes instead of ice cubes to chill your glass of wine. Unlike ice they won’t dilute your drink.
12.When using an electric whisk, punch the end of the whisks through a paper plate. The plate acts as a splatter shield
That’s it, my work here is done.

Mine would be to always fold a piece of kitchen towel and put at the bottom of your compost bin (if you have one) before filling with food waste – helps mop up up any excess liquid from eggshells, peelings, tea bags etc and prevents it melting a hole in the bottom of the bag & dribbling out of it as you take it outside to the caddy on your kerb!
