Happy new year! I hope you enjoyed Christmas/Chanukah/Winter Solstice or whatever else you celebrated. And that you feel rested from your break.
We had a party of 13 guests on Christmas Day. The preparations were a back-breaker: eight hours in the kitchen on Christmas Eve cooking the lunch, followed by furniture schlepping and rearranging.
The big day itself was great, boisterous, family fun. Everyone did their bit. The hubster made sure everyone was well lubricated (by which I mean they had a drink) and entertained with his quiz and party games; Sheila brought Christmas Pudding with rum sauce; Richard made an amazing banoffee pie. But the pièce de résistance was Jeanette’s red cabbage – what a masterpiece.*

The four of us then decamped to Norfolk for a couple of days of cold beach walks to blow away the cobwebs, followed by more eating.
We returned in time for new year’s eve, whence I passed out before midnight and woke up wearing all my clothes. That’s probably all you need to know about that.
Today is the start of a new EVERYTHING
The kids went back to school, excited to see their friends and relieved to return to a routine. And I’m starting the new year with real determination.
Today I started a 5:2 eating plan (I don’t do diets so I’m not calling this one). I bought a LighterLife Fast starter pack from Superdrug which contains four days’ worth of snacks, shakes and meals. I am allowed around 600 calories during each fasting day, which equals one bowl of porridge, a bowl of soup, a shake and a snack from the LighterLife Fast pack.
So far I’ve only had one bowl of soup and a few cups of jasmine tea and I feel satisfied. I’m putting it all out there on the blog to make myself accountable. Does anyone want to do this with me and be my accountability partner?
No more running (for now)
You might be wondering what the heck happened to all the running I was doing last year. It’s all gone a bit quiet on that front eh? It’s a long story, and it doesn’t have a happy ending.
I have arthritis in my knees – this is not new news, but it was manageable until an incident in December which rendered me housebound and reliant on a walking stick. I had a miserable two weeks where my kids were taken to school by kind friends as I couldn’t walk.
I have been having physiotherapy for a few weeks now and the pain is easing, but I’m under strict instructions not to run. Hence the focus on calories in, rather than calories out.
What else is changing?
I’m having a rethink about the blog. I don’t know what this year will bring in terms of my real job (recruitment), but if the last few weeks are anything to go by, it’s going to be busy. The blog gives me such pleasure, particularly when we get to talk – you know, just the two of us.
I just don’t want it to feel like a burden to HAVE to write every week. And all of the social media that goes with it – I just don’t have it in me.

My motto for 2017 is Peace, Unity, Love and Having Fun (old musical reference there). I think we could all use a little more of all of that.
And we might be getting a puppy. I’ll just leave this here.
