It’s no secret that handbags are my thing. I can be having a bad hair day, alongside a bloated tummy and spotty face week, but a statement handbag will always look good. Having recently brought you my Totes review, I’ve been scouring the shops and interweb for the best cross body bags and have a giveaway for you as well.
It’s been a hard slog finding the right selection – I know, the struggle is real. Most cross body bags this season are so small, there’s little room for more than a few loose coins and a set of keys. Perhaps during my student days that would have been sufficient, but these days I need a bag big enough to take my large purse, makeup, two mobile phones and my glasses, while giving me room for a good rummage. Because no matter how large the bag, I will fill the space available – like a style version of Parkinson’s Law.
Here are my top five cross body bags:
1.The ‘I have my whole world in my handbag‘ bag
The Arion Croc Front Bag is from Whistles. I found this in the sale for less than half price at House of Fraser . Whistles has become my latest go-to high street shop for high quality staples, especially jeans. For the first time in my adult life I now own a pair of jeans that don’t require a turn-up at the ankle, or a belt. But back to the bag. This has ample space for everything I mentioned above, as well as a book.
It’s very lightweight and the flap closure means you can really fill it up without struggling to secure it. There is a zip underneath the flap and a large front pocket. This one is going to improve with age. RRP £260 but on sale for £130 on Whistles website at time of publication.
2.The ‘I’m just popping to the shops‘ bag
I originally spotted this bag on SecretSales.com and having not heard of Mila Blu before, checked out their website. They have a huge selection of Italian leather handbags. Look out for them on SecretSales.com or Achica.
The neutral colour makes this the easiest bag to match with casual clothes and tassels are big this season. The bag has two zipped compartments and two small pockets inside.
3.The ‘three bags in one, goes with everything’ bag
Another chance find on the internet, this one from Zoe and Noe is so versatile. Featuring three slim, suede clutch bags which fit together with poppers, you can wear them individually or combine them as one bag with three pockets.
The middle bag has attachments for two straps – one small chain and suede handle, and one long leather strap which can be worn across the body. Zoe & Noe have flash sales on SecretSales.com, so you’ll just have to register for their sales alerts and keep an eye out.
4.The perfect day to evening bag
I just love this Smith & Canova handbag. Teal is such a great Spring colour and brings a dull outfit to life. If you’re a handbag lover, you need to check out this brand. There are so many great styles to choose from and the quality is amazing for the price.
The leather is soft and supple, there are multiple pockets and two removable straps – one short for the shoulder, and one long cross-body strap means this bag is great for work and play. This Versailles Zip Folder Shoulder Bag is £130 and is also available in pink.
5.The ‘look at me‘ bag
Since Mulberry became unaffordable, I’ve looked to Coach for my fix of luxury. This metallic leather clutch was on my wish list for Christmas 2014 and Santa delivered. I’ve used it such a lot – as an evening bag – but there is a heavy metallic strap which makes this a cross body option if you need to hold two glasses of wine simultaneously. You might be lucky enough to find a Coach Turnlock Clutch like this on eBay, otherwise Coach makes other styles in the same colour and fabric.
[Disclosure: thank you to Mila Blu, Zoe & Noe and Smith & Canova for sending me your fabulous handbags to review. You’ve made a middle aged woman very happy.]
